Born in Lagoa de Albufeira, Portugal, Rui is the son of a waterman and multiple champion windsurfer in the 1980s and ’90s, who also pioneered windsurfing, kitesurfing and Stand Up Paddling in Portugal. Growing up at one of the best spots meant being in the water since the age of four, and at 15 years old he started kiting and never stopped.
He became addicted to freestyle and started competing full time becoming National Champion, European Junior Champion and winner of multiple events and podiums on the KPWT and PKRA tours over the years. He went on to become an international judge on the same tours and is currently one of the GKA crew members. Most notably Rui is Judge and Race Director for the Strapless Freestyle and Twintip Freestyle categories, and well as a GWA crew member for the Wingfoil World Tour.
Being around the best riders keeps him more motivated than ever, and wingfoiling became his new passion, but it wasn’t love at first sight; it was love at first glide! His home spot has a lagoon separated from the ocean by only 200m of sand, so it’s a paradise for wave riding or pure freestyle on flat water. Rui finds fun in the simplicity of winging and being a natural freestyler it feels just like the way to go!
At Appletree, Rui is welcomed with open arms into the foil and wing team. His input will help us develop the range further and it will keep Appletree’s boards at the forefront of design and performance.
