In recent weeks, the team in Portugal has faced unprecedented challenges due to severe weather conditions. A sequence of heavy storms brought hurricane-force winds and torrential rains, leading to widespread flooding and power outages across the region. These storms disrupted daily life, with many of our team members experiencing extended periods without electricity or running water. Some had to rely on neighbors or local facilities for basic necessities like showering and collecting water.
Transportation was also heavily impacted, with road closures making it dangerous or impossible for some of us to commute safely. Despite these obstacles, our dedicated team worked tirelessly to keep production moving, embodying the resilience and commitment that defines the team at Appletree Surfboards.
Impact beyond our factory walls
While our factory remained structurally sound, the surrounding communities suffered significant damage. Homes were destroyed, and families displaced, highlighting the devastating impact of these extreme weather events. The Portuguese government declared a state of calamity in numerous municipalities, underscoring the severity of the situation.
It was also a very tense time for the kite school of Appletree team rider Paulino Pereira. The rapidly rising water put his kite school at risk, but thanks to everyone’s tremendous effort and the use of many sandbags, it was prevented from flooding.

These events serve as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather, a phenomenon closely linked to climate change. Scientific studies indicate that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall and more severe storms.
