Introducing Coat 25: A new step in board construction

Appletree Surfboards introduces Coat 25: a much lighter finish that makes our boards even more durable and improves how they ride.
In this new Tech Talk, we pull back the curtain on a project that fundamentally changes the way we finish our boards.
After two years of secret development and working closely with specialized composite industry suppliers, we are proud to introduce Coat 25, a new proprietary material that replaces traditional epoxy hot coats to reduce overall weight while maximizing scratch resistance and structural durability.
This transition involved more than just changing a material; it required a complete rethink of our production line. Having our own factory in Portugal gave us the unique advantage of testing lots of iterations in real-time.

What is Coat 25?
Coat 25 is not an epoxy resin. It is a completely new material engineered to be the ultimate finish layer for our boards. Traditionally, boards require a “hot coat” to achieve a smooth result, but standard epoxy adds unnecessary weight. Coat 25 replaces that old standard.
Why it changes the way the boards ride:
- Significantly Lighter: By moving away from traditional epoxy, we’ve stripped away dead weight without sacrificing an ounce of structural integrity.
- Scratch resistance: Coat 25 offers much higher scratch resistance, keeping your board looking fresh for longer, even under heavy use.
- Precision Finish: The material cures faster and flows better, allowing us to highlight the sharp details of our shapes that traditional epoxy sometimes hides.
The transition wasn’t easy. We had to completely retrain our entire hot coat department to master this new material. It required developing entirely new application methods to meet our strict quality standards. We even reworked our art process, so you can still customise your board with colour and artwork.
Coat 25 is now the standard on every Appletree surfboard. It’s here to stay, and we can’t wait for you to feel the difference in weight and precision on your next session.
