Tech Talk: Is a midlength foil board truly a quiver killer?

30.06.2025

What’s up everyone? We’re back with another exciting Tech Talk from Appletree Surfboards and today we’re going to talk about the Apple Skipper Midlength: a true performance-driven evolution in foil board design.

This high-performance board is built for prone, wing, and parawing riders, offering exceptional versatility across disciplines.

Whether you’re chasing early lift in light wind, dialing in your foil assist setup, or ready to take the next step in your wing or parawing progression — stay here, because the Skipper Midlength might just be the board you’ve been waiting for.

The Evolution of a New Shape

At Appletree, we’ve always pushed the boundaries of mid-length board design. From our AppleSlice V3 to last year’s Skipper Downwind Prone, we’ve consistently delivered sleeker, more efficient shapes for foilers looking to take things to the next level.

But something interesting happened with the Skipper Prone: while it was originally developed for downwind proning, many riders started using it for winging — and loving it. And then came the rise of parawinging, which introduced a whole new set of needs.

We knew it was time for a board specifically designed for this new, high-performance landscape.

Designed for Versatility Across Disciplines

The Skipper Midlength is available in a full size range — from 5’0” (37L) to 6’8” (97L) — covering different rider needs, styles, and wind conditions.

Whether you’re chasing prone speed, progressing in wing or parawing, or looking for extra lift in light wind, here’s how each size performs:

  • Smaller sizes: Ideal for prone foilers, advanced wing/parawing riders, or those using foil assist who aren’t ready to fully commit to the Zapple.
  • Mid-range sizes: Balanced, responsive, and designed for all-around wing and parawing performance, with impressive low-end efficiency for their volume.
  • Larger sizes: Built for light wind sessions, delivering excellent glide and early lift — without the added length or bulk of a full downwind board.

Fun fact: all Skipper Midlength boards have volumes ending in “7,” so if you spot a 47L, 67L, or 97L out there, you’ll know it’s part of the Skipper Midlength family.

Not for Beginners — Built for Performance

Let’s be clear: the Skipper Midlength is not a beginner board. If you’re just starting out, we strongly recommend the Apple Slice V3, which offers greater stability and a wider outline for easier progression.

The Skipper Midlength is purpose-built for experienced foilers who want to squeeze every bit of performance out of their sessions.

What Makes It Different?

The Skipper Midlength blends high-efficiency design with carefully considered details that elevate your ride:

  • Narrow profile for low-drag paddling and faster foil lift
  • Refined rail and displacement hull for optimal water release
  • Increased rocker for tighter turns and better pump control
  • Forward foil box & foot strap inserts for that “short board” feeling on a longer shape
  • Wing construction for added durability and stiffness
  • Carry handle & strap inserts (Y-strap front, single rear)

All of this results in a ride that’s fast, highly responsive, and tuned for experienced riders who demand precision and control.
