Malus Domestica
Allround kiteboard for freestyle and small waves
Don’t want to choose between waves and freestyle? Meet the Malus Domestica! Appletree’s allround kite surfboard for freestyle and kitesurfing small waves. It ‘eats’ anything you throw at it and rides upwind like no other.
The Malus Domestica is the product of a long search for the perfect crossover directional kiteboard for those who ride freestyle, but also can’t resist smashing a wave from time-to-time. The Malus will make sure you get a shot at both, which means you can relish your time on the water even more.
Easy rides in choppy conditions
Never let choppy and messy conditions ruin your fun, but go out and enjoy it! The unique triple concave on the bottom of the Malus Domestica makes the board very stable upwind and through chop. The wider tail template and parallel rails make It very easy to ride. It will make kitesurfing in choppy and messy conditions smooth and fun.
Freestyle power
Be ready to add some awesomeness to your freestyle repertoire, because that comes naturally with the Malus Domestica. The triple concave prevents the board from sliding out landing sideways. And the wider platform is stable to stick the hardest freestyle tricks and landings.
Key board features
Triple concave
The extreme bottom contour gives the Malus Domestica quite an appearance. But this is not where the board started. When designing a board, we first try to find the best combination of rocker, outline and rails. Only when we have this balance right, we add stuff like crazy tails and bottoms to make the board better. And more exciting!
Thin rails
The deep concaves on the rail give the board great stability when riding upwind. The bottom follows the deck contour, making the effective rail thinner and better through chops, without making the board itself too thin.
Effective surface
The concaves cut the rocker in the middle of the bottom, this creates a super effective surface for the water to pass underneath. Making the board really fast and early planing. Make sure to move your feet to the front when riding upwind and to the back when initiating a turn.
5 fin boxes
The Malus Domestica comes with 5 fin boxes as standard, giving you the choice of riding quad or thruster.

CUSTOM CONSTRUCTION
50K CLOSED CELL FOAM
Every board we make starts with a foam core of our very own 50K closed cell foam. This foam is formalized exclusively for us, it is not used in any other board in the market.
The foam can withstand 50.000 kg per square meter, while staying very light, and most of all very flexible. Another plus of our 50K foam is that it is closed cell, meaning that the foam will not take in water. And the board will not blow out when it gets hot.
From the shaped foam we can go two ways: Hex-skin Carbon or Hex-skin Glass.
HEX-SKIN GLASS
The base of the board consists of three layers wrapped around the core. An internal structural fibreglass layer, a hex-skin flexible honeycomb layer and another structural fibreglass layer that is placed in a 45 degree orientation. This to keep the board as flexible as possible while making a very strong base. The bottom is left without honeycomb, again to maintain maximum flex. How your board is constructed next depends on the strength option you choose.
The different strength options are explained in detail below. The board is now placed under a vacuum and with pressure, forcing the epoxy resin into the fibres. This way we use minimal resin and maximum fibre. Making the board super strong, yet very light. The colour is added as a pigment to the epoxy resin, coloring the entire board.
HEX-SKIN CARBON
Hex-skin Carbon is similar in composition to the Hex-skin Glass boards. But instead of glass we use 100% carbon fibre, there is no glass hidden underneath the top layer of carbon. Using carbon makes the board lighter and it makes it stick to your feet even better. Because the board is so light, it flows over the chops a lot better than you might expect.
To give the carbon boards their unique look the deck is finished with a tinted resin, that can be customized. Pick your own colour or mix multiple for a truly one-of-a kind board.
STRENGTH OPTIONS HEX-SKIN GLASS
White-line build strength
This is the standard construction for kite wave surfing. Meaning true surfing with a kite. You can do the occasional freestyle jump, but in general these boards are made for the waves. The construction consists of the normal Kite+ construction, but without the internal 3mm honeycomb. Instead there is an extra biaxial fibreglass layer under the front foot. The construction is more than strong enough for everyday use, and you will not ding the board easily. After some time slight heel dents may appear, this is considered normal, and it will not weaken the board.
Kite+
This is our standard custom construction, pictured above. Suits most riders for wave and freestyle. And is therefore our standard custom strength construction. Under the front foot there’s a large patch of 3mm honeycomb inlaid in the foam core, with fibreglass underneath. The core is then wrapped by a layer of structural fibre- glass in a 45 degree orientation. A second thin flexible honeycomb layer is now layered all over the deck for more impact resistance. The Kite+ strength has the perfect balance between weight, strength and flex.
Kite+ S
The same construction as the Kite+ but with all the glass in S glass. This higher quality glass is stronger and more flexible. Because of this, we can use less fibreglass and this makes the board about 15-20% lighter.
STRENGTH OPTIONS HEX-SKIN CARBON
CF- Ultralight
The lightest possible kite board. If you are after the lightest possible kiteboard construction, this is the way to go! Slight heel dents may appear over time, depending on rider’s weight and foot pressure, but the boards are ultra strong. Not really recommended for 100% free- style, but the occasional jump is not a problem at all.
CF+
Our standard custom carbon construction, pictured above. Suits most riders for wave and freestyle and offers the right balance between weight, strength and flex. This board will last you a very long time. And in carbon fibre it is light and looks the part too!

Amazing Boards and Service. I am around in kitesurfing since day 1 in germany. I have seen many shapers/start-ups – but never such quality and actually shaping. If you haven’t yet, check out the homepage. The descriptions are accurate – you will feel that immediately jumping on those boards. But be aware, they don’t lie. And that is what I super appreciate – the boards deliver radically on what they promise on…super stoked!

Bought the Malus Domestica (5″2″), apple green, what else 🙂 ? Have been kiting for 19 yrs but this is by far the best board for North Sea conditions I’ve rode so far. Super versatile, holds well in waves up to overhead. Quick sharp turns and easy to go upwind with. Solid construction and love the fact that you can customise your board

I love everything about this board. Crushes chop, rides over powered very well and incredibly stable even when rocketing down the wave face at mach speed, goes upwind like a twin tip. The rails on the edge make for a perfect hand grip which helps with board offs and walking out to the water in high wind. Fin boxes are super strong and so is the board, never have a soft spot again. I run it in quad fin and it absolutely rips!

Got MD in 5’1″ after test riding Appleflap Noseless 5’3″ and MD 5’2″. Had a great support from Wieger about choosing the size and fin setup. Can not be happier with my choice! The board is so comfortable and easy and fun to ride! I am new to strapless kitesurfing and can not properly evaluate all the pros and cons of MD, but this board helps me progress and makes me wanna go riding more and more. Eats the chop, turns nicely and goes upwind so well! The bright orange color helps immensely with visibility especially in the waves and in cloudy conditions. I am using it in Quad fin setup, FCS2 H4 fins. Tried Thruster, but the upwind suffers, which is important for me in the conditions I ride in. The ordering process was a breeze going via the Bulgarian Appletree dealer and the custom made board arrived sooner than scheduled! Keep it up AP team!

What awesome wave and strapless freestyle board!
What i really like about this board is:
– Great upwind ability
– easy turns in the wave
– easy pop off the water and great to grab while jumping
– big sweet spot
What I enjoy the most whit this board, are light wind sessions (> 16 knots) with my 10m Kite and a nice small swell . It is pure dreams to cruise down the waves and easy to go upwind again.
Many thanks…
