Review highlights: what Foiling Mag had to say
The Appleslice is an absolute classic in the industry, but this fourth generation (V4) takes the shape to a whole new level. Here is what Chris and Rich highlighted after putting it through its paces:
- Real Evolution (Not just a cosmetic update): Whilst it might look similar to the V3 on paper, “in the flesh, instantly it’s different.” The shape has evolved to be longer, thinner, more elegant, and far more efficient.
- The nose & forward volume: They’ve carried more volume forwards and added more nose rocker. This makes the board incredibly stable when you’re sitting on your knees waiting for a gust, and brilliant at bouncing back up during touchdowns. Plus, the amplified recess on the deck lets you bump your foot right against it, so you know exactly where to drive the board from.
- Lighter than ever: Thanks to a change in the surface finish, using a sprayed coat instead of a traditional hot coat, Appletree has saved around 10% of weight per board (a massive 500 to 600g saving). It feels noticeably lighter in the hand whilst retaining our legendary vacuum-infused stiffness.
- Expanded range up to 115 litres: Because of the weight savings in construction, we can now offer bigger volumes (from 50L up to 115L in 10-litre increments). This makes it a highly competitive performance option for heavier riders or intermediate wingers looking for full float.
- Instant, clean release: The tail is much narrower, meaning it sinks slightly when you first jump on, allowing you to lean against that forward volume. Once moving, it doesn’t just build speed slowly; it “hops up onto the surface and goes very quickly.”
- Forward foil box position: Shifting the foil tracks further forward than on the V3 aligns perfectly with modern foils. It allows for a much more centralised, natural stance without needing to make sudden feet adjustments at the moment of take-off.
- Premium features & tech: The team loved the finish of our new corduroy pad (heaps of grip whilst letting you slide your feet up and down easily), the closed-cell foam that won’t soak up water if dinged, and the built-in NFC microchip near the leash plug to register your board.
